That’s the kind of team player Dempster is: he’ll accept a trade to a contender because he knows it’s best for the Cubs. I know players with 10/5 are well within their rights to decline a trade but this is a refreshing change from other Cubs stars like Derrick Lee and Aramis Ramirez who both turned down trades to contenders in the past two seasons. It’s hard for the team to get better when their own trade chips won’t accept the trade.
Dempster is a class act all around. He’ll be missed by his teammates and the fans. I hold out a glimmer of hope that maybe he could come back as a free agent. His leadership around the young guys sets a great example and many young guys have publicly thanked him in the press. The Cubs placed Anthony Rizzo’s locker next to Dempster’s for a reason.
